SESSION FOUR KIT

Debbie Herbeck

Don’t Battle Alone

Debbie breaks down What authentic community is and how we can foster it in our current context. What are the markers of a healthy, Catholic women’s community? How do we strive to live into and fight for this kind of community.

Personal Reflection

You may want to take a bit of time to personally reflect on these questions before beginning prayer ministry.

Question 1. I Peter 1:22 “Love one another sincerely from the heart.”

  • What does it mean practically to love another sincerely from the heart?

  • What things in our lives/within us are obstacles to this kind of sincere love?

Question 2. Colossians 3:12: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

  • Go through this passage and identify virtues, attitudes, actions that St. Paul asks us to put on. Ask the Lord to show you which ones you can grow in more.

Question 3. Is there anyone in your life right now that the Lord is asking you to forgive, any grievances you’ve been holding onto, afraid to let go of?

Question 4. Who might the Lord be calling you to “champion” right now, and how can you practically express that in your life?

Henri Nouwen "Community is like a large mosaic. Each little piece seems so insignificant. One piece is bright red, another cold blue or dull green, another warm purple, another sharp yellow, another shining gold. Some look precious, others ordinary. Some look valuable, others worthless. Some look gaudy, others delicate. As individual stones, we can do little with them except compare them and judge their beauty and value. When, however, all these little stones are brought together in one big mosaic portraying the face of Christ, who would ever question the importance of any one of them? If one of them, even the least spectacular one, is missing, the face is incomplete. Together in the one mosaic, each little stone is indispensable and makes a unique contribution to the glory of God. That’s community, a fellowship of little people who together make God visible in the world.”

Practical Ways to Develop Authentic Community

  1. Cultivate and invest in authentic relationships, real relationships. Open yourself up and go deeper.

  2. Sincerely forgive as an act of love. Remember the truth, God loves this person as much as He loves you.

  3. Community over competition/comparison. Champion other women.

  4. Develop intergenerational relationships/community.

  SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:

Romans 13:8 ‘Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.’

Hebrews 3:13 ‘But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” so that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

Colossians 3:16 ‘Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.’

1 Peter 1:22 ‘Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another sincerely from the heart.’

Colossians 3:12-13 As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
